The Hannah Arendt Institute of Artivism (INSTAR) is holding until next Saturday its second film festival, with independent audiovisual works censored by Cuban officialdom.
The showcase includes titles and authors such as Quiero hacer una película (Yimit Ramírez, 2020), Sueños al pairo (Fernando Fraguela and José Luis Aparicio, 2020), Corazón azul (Miguel Coyula, 2021), Vulgarmente clásica X (Nonardo Perea, 2021) and Now! (Eliécer Jiménez, 2016).
The presentations, entirely online, began on December 4 through a digital platform, where those interested in enjoying a novel and transgressive creative compendium can register.
Cubans living on the island will be able to enjoy the films completely free of charge, as long as they complete a series of prior steps and obtain the promotional code that gives them access to all the content, as explained on INSTAR's Facebook page.
Film critic Antonio Enrique Gonzalez Rojas described the INSTAR Film Festival as a platform for visibilization and mapping of moving images conceived by national filmmakers, which is thought and happens parallel to Cuban institutional spaces.
"The need for Cuban exhibitions, festivals, exhibition and distribution circuits in Cuba, not governed by official institutions, is a cry for help for the national audiovisual industry, on pain of remaining unknown, non-existent, for the majority of the public," wrote Gonzalez Roja in Hipermedia Magazine.
Filmmakers from other countries such as Mexico, Dominican Republic, Colombia and Spain will also be present at the film show.
The Hannah Arendt Artivist Institute was created in Havana by artist and activist Tania Bruguera, and one of its objectives is to work with the people who will be in charge of building democracy in Cuba on a daily basis, demanding their rights and fighting for social justice in their schools and jobs; transforming viewers into active citizens.
